1930s Rotary Claridge Wrist Watch

1920 - 1940
Description

Watch : 1930s Rotary Claridge Wrist Watch

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel hand-winding movement which is working nicely.

The watch measures 22mm wide excluding the winding crown, and 30mm high excluding the lugs. Originally designed as a man’s watch, it would suit a slimmer wrist, or it could be worn as a lady’s watch. The case is rolled gold and is signed inside with the name Claridge, and also the initials SD for Sylvain Dreyfuss.

Rotary Watches Ltd was established at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, by Moise Dreyfuss in 1895. By the 1920s family members Georges and Sylvain Dreyfuss began importing Rotary watches to Britain, which was to become the company's most successful market.

The case is in good condition for such an early piece, just rubbing along the angled edges and light marking, but not too detrimental at all.

The convex lens is in good condition (some natural light reflection showing in the photos).

The dial is in its original finish with original hands. There is a shade or two of darkening but still easy to read the time.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wristwatches from the 1930s are recognised by geometric case silhouettes, notably rectangular and square tank designs, alongside bold typographic dials featuring stylized Arabic numerals and auxiliary sub-seconds dials.

Timepieces of this era were commonly crafted with gold-plated or rolled gold cases, fitted with acrylic or mineral crystals, manual-wind Swiss mechanical movements, and leather wrist straps.

Authentic period watches feature stamped movement plates displaying Swiss origin markings, period-accurate typography, mechanical hand-wound movements rather than quartz, and correct proportioned cases.

A classic wristwatch can be styled within a dedicated valet tray, glass-topped jewellery box, or mounted on a marble watch stand placed on a bedroom dressboy or dressing table.

Keep mechanical wristwatches away from water, extreme temperatures, and magnetic fields, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
