Edwardian furniture, dating from roughly 1901 to 1910, shifted away from the heavy ornamentation of the Victorian era towards lighter, more refined proportions. Chests of drawers from this era often feature clean geometric lines, lighter finishes, simple brass hardware, and high-grade woods such as oak, mahogany, and satinwood.

Edwardian oak chests were typically constructed using solid oak framed panels with quarter-sawn oak veneers on prominent surfaces to showcase ray patterns. Drawers were built with hand-cut or early machine-cut dovetail joints, solid timber drawer bases, and fitted with cast brass drop handles or bail handles.

Authentic pieces feature dovetail joinery inside the drawer boxes, smooth drawer runners showing period wear, original brass lock escutcheons, and natural oxidisation on unexposed interior surfaces. Edwardian chests also feature tapered feet or bracket feet with restrained decorative moulding near the plinth or frieze.

An Edwardian oak chest functions well as a focal storage piece in a bedroom, hallway, or living room space. Positioning contemporary ceramics, framed artwork, or a table lamp on top creates an effective contrast between historical timber tones and modern decorative accents.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the chest away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage, drawer binding, or movement in the timber panels.
