A very nice piece of social history..... this 19thc brass snuff box, which is finely engraved Richard Russell - Boiler Maker - Roath....conjures up the picture of this highly skilled gentleman, probably working in uncomfortable conditions...very hot, physically demanding and would have been dirty requiring immense stamina and strength... boilermakers were predominantly employed in major industrial hubs near ironworks, shipyards, and mines....this gentleman came from Roath in the north east of Cardiff in Wales, where there was ship building and coal mining...both needing boilers...the snuff box is in very good condition with no damage.

This nineteenth-century Victorian snuff box takes an oval form in brass with a polished golden-yellow metallic finish and dark patination in the recessed areas. The hinged lid carries hand-engraved lettering that reads "RICHARD.RUSSELL" along the top curve, "BOILER.MAKER" through the centre, and "R O A T H" along the bottom edge, separated by small decorative abstract motifs.
