125 X 161cm Antique Green Silk Lakai Nim Suzani

19th century
Description

It's very unusual to find a lakai with a green field. It's also one of the best colours and I love how this rare embroidery sings. The combination of different coloured wool and silk embroidery on the shimmering blue/green background is wonderful. Made in Uzbekistan for a wealthy family the small size is very versatile for display. In very good condition, some small splits to be expected in a fragile textile like this and one small hole on the left side border.

4'1" x 5'3"

Declaration

James Cohen Antique Carpets has dated this Green Silk Lakai Suzani to the 1880s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Nim Suzani is a half-sized traditional Central Asian embroidered textile, created principally by Uzbek and Lakai nomadic weavers. These pieces feature silk embroidery on cotton or silk panels and were historically stitched as dowry gifts.

Suzanis are typically worked in silk thread using chain stitch (ilmok) or couching techniques (basma) over narrow woven strips of cotton or silk fabric that are stitched together after embroidery is complete.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun ground fabrics, natural vegetable dyes that produce slight colour variations (abrash), fine irregular stitching, and narrow stitched sections aligned to form the larger pattern.

A Suzani can be mounted as a wall hanging, draped over upholstered furniture, or placed at the foot of a bed to introduce colour, texture, and historic pattern into contemporary rooms.

Keep embroidered silk away from direct sunlight and damp conditions. Display by supporting the weight evenly with acid-free backing or VELCRO mounting strips, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning.
