Antique Caucasian rugs originate from the Caucasus region situated between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, encompassing modern-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and parts of Russia. They are historically renowned for their bold geometric motifs, saturated primary colour palettes, and intricate tribal symbolism woven by nomadic and village weavers.

These pieces are traditionally hand-knotted using handspun wool for both the pile and the foundation, which includes the warp and weft threads. Natural dyes derived from plants, roots, insects, and minerals were historically employed to achieve rich tones that develop a distinctive patina over time.

Authentication involves examining the knot structure, irregularities in the weave characteristic of hand-production, the presence of natural dye variations or abrash, and the condition of the wool. Examining the backside reveals the structural integrity, hand-spun characteristics of the yarn, and traditional selvedge finishes.

An antique tribal rug functions effectively as a focal point in contemporary spaces, grounding neutral rooms with rich colour and graphic patterns. It can be layered over natural fibre flooring or placed on hardwood surfaces to introduce texture and historical character to minimalist or eclectic schemes.

Preservation requires regular, gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush bar to protect the pile, alongside professional cleaning by specialists experienced in antique textiles. Direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight should be avoided to prevent fading of natural dyes, and rug underlays should be used to reduce friction and movement.
