Jaf Kurdish Rug

19th century
Description

One of the best examples of a Jaf Kurdish rug that I have seen to date. As ever the colours are as strong as the design is bold. A feature of these rugs is the presence of offset knotting which allows for a cleaner diagonal line to be drawn. It has such a strong presence that it may dominate a room, it certainly needs the right space. Good tribal rugs such as this are quality pieces, the wool is beautifully soft and the vegetable dyes strong. See how some ornaments are cut off by others giving the impression of depth.

Excellent condition with just a little wear with the odd red weft showing. The sides and ends are good and original with just a little unravelling for a small section at one end.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jaf Kurdish rugs are hand-woven textiles created by the Jaf nomadic tribe in the border regions between Iran and Iraq. They are predominantly recognised for their bold geometric patterns, particularly repeating diamond or hexagonal latch-hook motifs filled with contrasting saturated colours.

Authentic Kurdish rugs are traditionally constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft. The wool is dyed using natural plant and mineral dyes, resulting in rich, durable shades of navy blue, deep red, ochre, and ivory.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted construction with symmetrical or asymmetrical knots on a heavy wool foundation, often resulting in a slightly irregular shape. They feature characteristic diamond latch-hook medallions and multi-tiered geometric borders without rigid symmetry.

A tribal Kurdish rug can be used to ground contemporary, minimalist, or eclectic rooms by introducing rich visual texture and historical character. Place it in entryways, corridors, or living spaces alongside natural timber, leather, or neutral upholstery.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to avoid damaging the hand-spun wool fibres. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth, and utilise professional specialist rug cleaning services for periodic maintenance.
