Yomut Azmalyk, Central Asia, Circa 1880, 115cm X 70cm

19th century
Description

'Azmalyk' is the term for piled trappings woven by the Turkmen tribes of Central Asia that were used on either side of the camel on ceremonial occasions, in particular weddings. Often finely woven in the pentagonal format, they were considered to be among the most coveted of Turkmen weavings. This piece is a classic example of a Yomut Azmalyk from the last quarter of the 19th century. It has fine wool and beautiful natural dyes, with a Persian knot open to the right. The field design and borders are very typical and beautifully drawn. Excellent original condition. A very collectible example.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Yomut Azmalyk is a traditional five-sided woven textile created by the Yomut tribe of Central Asia, historically crafted as a decorative wedding trapping for camels during ceremonial processions.

These textiles are hand-knotted or woven using hand-spun wool for both warp and weft, utilising natural dyes to produce deep reds, blues, and ivory tones.

Authentic pieces feature a distinct pentagonal shape, natural dye variations, traditional geometric lattice motifs, and hand-spun wool construction specific to nomadic tribal weaving.

Trappings of this distinct pentagonal shape are commonly displayed as mounted wall art, placed above consoles, or hung in entryways to introduce geometric texture and rich colour tones.

Vacuum gently without a rotary brush, display away from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and consult a specialist textile conservator for professional cleaning.
