Yomut Azmalyk, Central Asia, Circa 1880, 115cm X 70cm

£1,450    $1,957    €1,693
''Azmalyk'' is the term for piled trappings woven by the Turkmen tribes of Central Asia that were used on either side of the camel on ceremonial occasions, in particular weddings. Often finely woven in the pentagonal format, they were considered to be among the most coveted of Turkmen weavings. This piece is a classic example of a Yomut Azmalyk from the last quarter of the 19th century. It has fine wool and beautiful natural dyes, with a Persian knot open to the right. The field design and borders are very typical and beautifully drawn. Excellent original condition. A very collectible example.
