Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Solid pine interior boards and shelves: regional Scandinavian cabinet work.
Iron lock box mounted to door interior: nineteenth-century provincial hardware.
Fluted lozenge relief panels: neoclassical Gustavian vernacular styling.
Shrinkage gaps around the drawer frames: natural movement in aged solid timber.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Scandinavian country cupboard is fashioned from pine with a pale grey painted finish and brass hardware. The piece presents a low rear gallery, two drawers with fluted carvings flanking central circular brass pulls, and two doors ornamented with raised diamond panel motifs in vertical fluting. The cupboard rests on shaped feet and stands 118 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, enclosing a shelved interior. Positioned in a living area, kitchen, or hallway, this rustic farmhouse storage unit offers practical surface space on top and concealed shelving behind double doors. The neutral colour palette and geometric carved details suit both traditional country interiors and minimalist modern spaces, serving as a functional sideboard or storage cabinet for daily household items.

FAQs

Scandinavian painted furniture typically features simple geometric forms, muted pale colour palettes, and softwood construction, designed historically to reflect natural light during long Nordic winters.

These cupboards were predominantly constructed from local softwoods such as pine or fir, using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, and layers of milk or oil-based paint.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural signs of age, including layered paint showing timber beneath, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original iron or brass lock mechanisms, and uneven wear along edges and feet.

A painted cupboard functions effectively as a sideboard or storage piece in neutral modern spaces, where its understated colour, carved detailing, and rustic patina contrast with contemporary fixtures.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and avoid using harsh chemical sprays. To protect the painted finish and underlying timber, maintain a consistent indoor humidity level away from direct heat sources.
