Haynes King, Gathering from the Spring - Antique Oil Painting

This late 19th-century oil on canvas by British artist Haynes King (1831-1904) depicts a young woman gathering water from a hillside spring, set within a gently rolling rural landscape. It reflects King’s enduring fascination with intimate, narrative scenes drawn from country life.

Barefoot upon the earth, she leans forward to steady a pail of water, her posture slightly turned as she glances outward with a soft, contemplative expression. Her clothing, which is modest yet delicately coloured, adds a gentle warmth to the composition: a pale pink blouse, a yellow apron, and a darker skirt, each rendered with a sensitivity to texture and light. Around her, the land breathes with life - grasses, wildflowers, and mossy stones become animated by loose, responsive brushwork. Beyond, the hills recede under a shifting sky.

King’s handling is both assured and expressive. The figure is modelled with care, her face and hands receiving particular attention, while the surrounding landscape is treated more freely. This contrast creates a subtle emphasis on her presence, drawing the viewer into her world. The play of light across the surface, which is caught in the glint of the water, the sheen of the metal, and the soft highlights on her skin, adds a further layer of immediacy.

Haynes King was a painter deeply attuned to the appeal of everyday narratives. Born in Barbados and trained in London at Leigh’s Academy, he developed a style influenced in part by Thomas Faed (1825-1900), favouring scenes of rural life. His works often centre on young women within pastoral settings. King regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists - building a reputation for compositions that balanced charm with technical refinement.

Within his oeuvre, works such as this encapsulate his ability to transform a simple act into a quietly evocative image. He had a skill for elevating a simple moment of everyday ritual through careful observation and painterly sensitivity.

King painted this subject on a few occasions, with one of these titled 'The Highland Spring (1878)', receiving an estimate of £3,000-£5,000 at Christie's in 2016. Further information can be provided if required.
