Large Cityscape with Pierrot and Harlequin, the Imaginary Quays, Paris, Ca 1960 by Gabriel Dauchot Oil on Canvas.

1940 - 1960
Description

Gabriel Dauchot (1927-2005) was the quintessential artist: unworldly, bohemian, romantic, frequently drunk.

Dauchot’s world is one where anonymous, melancholic, and dreamy figures—weary waiters, quiet couples, elegant ladies, street musicians—mingle naturally with characters straight out of the commedia dell'arte.

In this large work, the Pierrot and Harlequin aren't just performers; they feel less like figures on a stage and more like presences woven into the scene itself. By titling the piece "Imaginary Quays," Dauchot gives us permission to step out of geography and into emotion. The river is not just the Seine; it is a stage where the everyday and the theatrical collide, creating a sense of a city that is both grand and deeply intimate.

A Parisian "School of Paris" artist often called "the painter of the human comedy", Dauchot admired Maurice Utrillo and Chaim Soutine. He studied with Yves Brayer and Othon-Friez and received enormous acclaim, being hailed as one of the most important artists of his generation.

In 1951 Dauchot was awarded the Prize of the Society of Art Collectors. In spite of his young age, Dauchot exhibited at the prestigious Galleries Durand-Ruel and Katia Granoff in Paris.

Internationally, his work was shown with the Hattfield Gallery in Los Angeles, Juster Gallery in New York, Carel Gallery in Miami and the O'Hana Gallery in London.

Former French president and avid art collector Jacques Chirac praised Dauchot's work in a speech, and actress Greta Garbo was known to be a collector of Dauchot's work.

Signed at the lower left, the painting measures 40 x 80 cm. Luxuriously framed, the overall framed size in an elegant traditional French frame is 59 x 99 cm.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the mid-20th century, artists associated with the School of Paris captured urban scenes with expressive brushwork, incorporating theatrical motifs like the Commedia dellarte to depict city life.

Mid-century painters generally applied oil pigments onto stretched cotton or linen canvas, using palette knives and bristle brushes to build up impasto layers.

Authentic works display thick impasto application, signature Pierrot or Harlequin figures within urban compositions, and a distinct lower-corner artist signature.

Mount the artwork as a central focus above a clean-lined sideboard or mantelpiece, using focused gallery lighting to highlight the textured paint surface.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry soft brush, keep the canvas away from direct heat sources or high humidity, and avoid applying commercial liquid cleaners.
