A Journey to Ireland Oil Sketches on Panel Signed and Dated 1851

19th century
Description

Henry Richard Graves – A journey to Ireland with John William Montagu, the 7th Earl of Sandwich

Oil on prepared panel signed ‘HG’ and dated Oct 1851 (lower right corner), further inscribed with the artists monogram alongside the title: ‘Reminiscences of a journey to Ireland in company with Mr Sandwich’, Sep 1851 (lower centre). The panel is impressed with the manufacturers stamp; BROWN 163 HIGH HOLBORN. The picture has had a light surface clean without using solvents and is presented in its original glazed maple frame.

Panel: 10 3/4 x 13 3/4 in. (27.3 x 35 cm.)

Frame: 12 5/8 x 15 5/8 in. (32 x 39.5 cm.)

The beautifully painted vignettes depict a variety of subjects including; ‘A Trip on a Paddle Steamer’; ‘A Ride in a Cart‘; ‘A Train Journey’, ‘A View of a Lake’; ‘A view in a Town’; ‘Performing Dogs’; and various other studies. The full-length portrait of the man is believed to be John Montagu, the 7th Earl of Sandwich. In 1852 Henry Graves exhibited a portrait of The Hon. Oliver Montague, youngest son of the Earl of Sandwich at the Royal Academy, No.165.

The specific event referenced in the vignettes is the official liquidation and sale of the Irish ancestral estates belonging to John William Montagu, which culminated between September and October 1851. While the 7th Earl lived primarily at Hinchingbrooke House in Huntingdonshire, England, his trip to Ireland during this exact window was a high-profile business and legal venture. It was triggered by the aftermath of the Great Irish Famine and the introduction of the Incumbered Estates Act.

This Victorian fine art piece is an oil painting on prepared panel signed and dated 1851 by Henry Richard Graves, depicting a journey to Ireland in company with John William Montagu, the 7th Earl of Sandwich. The work consists of multiple vignette sketches showing figures, steamships, and landscapes, set inside a glazed warm brown maple wood frame with a visible grain pattern and rounded inner moulding. The panel bears the manufacturer stamp of Brown of 163 High Holborn, and the artwork includes a signature, date, and artist monogram. The panel measures 27.3 x 35 cm and the frame measures 32 x 39.5 cm. In a home today, this artwork belongs above a sideboard or inside a gentleman's library, providing a focal point on a study or living room wall.

Composite oil sketch panels from the mid-nineteenth century are collections of painted vignettes arranged on a single wood surface, often serving as visual travel diaries, commemorative records, or preliminary artist studies.

Artists typically executed these works using oil-based pigments applied directly onto seasoned wooden panels, such as mahogany, oak, or pine, which were subsequently housed in veneered or gilded softwood frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural craquelure, age-related oxidisation of the varnish, period-correct costumes and transport modes, genuine wood panel shrinkage, and historical artist signatures or date inscriptions.

Position the piece as a focal artwork above a console table or sideboard, or integrate it into a gallery wall alongside brass sconces and dark wood furnishings to enhance a traditional or eclectic interior scheme.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, retain stable ambient humidity to prevent wood warping or paint flaking, and dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush without applying chemical solvents.
