This large eighteenth-century oil on canvas portrait depicts Elizabeth Creed, nee Luscombe, wearing a blue dress with white lace cuffs and a draped terracotta shawl, seated beside a stone fountain detail with an upper inscription. Created in an English country house style within a nineteenth-century composition frame, the artwork shows signs of age in its unrestored surface condition. The rectangular composition measures 147 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Suitable for period and traditional interiors, this fine art piece hangs prominently above a mantel or upon a living room wall. It brings historic character and traditional British portraiture into residential spaces, serving as a striking focal point in reception rooms, libraries, or studies.

18th-century British portraiture frequently features sitters in formal drapery, set against dark classical architecture or landscape backgrounds, strongly influenced by Baroque and Georgian aesthetics.

These portraits were executed using hand-ground mineral pigments suspended in linseed oil, applied onto hand-woven linen canvas stretched over wooden stretcher frames.

Key indicators include age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, hand-stitched linen canvas seams, stretcher impression marks, natural varnish yellowing, and historical inscription styles.

An 18th-century portrait serves as a central focal point when hung against a rich wall colour or integrated into a modern gallery wall paired with contemporary picture lighting.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, wiping dust gently with a soft dry brush and consulting a conservator for surface cleaning.
