For Sale by Youngs Antiques
Description

A high quality 19th century French gilt carved settee with original in need of reupholstery.

The top rail having a central carved female head flanked by superbly carved foliage and intertwined scrolls. The back uprights almost like panelled columns terminating in scrolled foliate finials. The padded swept arms having scrolls and acanthus gilt carved features , with small carved tassels on the outside of the arm. A small row of nulling above the egg and dart conical turned and carved front legs, with the back legs being of square form and slightly sweeping out almost forming a sabre.

The original Aubusson tapestry has faded colours, with quality stitching to form ornate pictures expressing its high quality craftsmanship of the day. The tapestry depicts a central cartouche surrounded by garlands of foliage with a face central to the seat.

This is a fantastic country house settee and in original untouched condition.

Overall the settee is in excellent sturdy condition and does have losses and rips to the upholstery, with some minor losses and ware to the gilding commensurate with age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century French giltwood settee is characterized by its wooden frame coated in gold leaf over a gesso ground, featuring relief carvings influenced by Louis XV, Louis XVI, or Rococo Revival designs.

These pieces were typically constructed with carved timber frames, often walnut or beech, covered in chalky gesso and real gold leaf, paired with hand-woven tapestry or silk upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature natural signs of age, such as visible gesso underneath red clay bole where the gold leaf has worn away, hand-carved joinery, and period-appropriate wear to the underside of the frame.

Positioning a gilded antique settee against contemporary minimalist walls or alongside clean-lined furniture creates a visual contrast, highlighting the detailed historical craftsmanship.

Dust giltwood gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical polish which strips the gold leaf. Tapestry textile should be protected from direct sunlight and vacuumed gently using a low-suction mesh cover.
