108 X 288cm Antique Seychour Long Rug, the Caucasus

Description

From the golden age of Caucasian rug weaving, circa 1850-1875 comes this beautifully coloured long rug with a very unusual green background. It's one of the best colours to find in any rug and, this lovely green, but very few rugs were made with it. The story goes that it is disrespectful to walk on Islamic green but I think the more likely explanation is that it is a very hard colour to make that is light fast. Most greens tend to fade as the yellow dye mixed with indigo loses its strength over time revealing the blue. So here is a triumph of dying with a rainbow of other colours including a fabulous gold border.

Non-original sides and scattered small repairs throughout.
