Extremely Fine and Rare Japanese Cloisonne Plate, with Auspicious Symbols. Circa 1900.

Masterpiece: Extremely high quality with beautiful colours and artwork.

Superbly rendered and highly complex cloisonne enamel plate. Realistic foliage, flowers, village scene, insects and auspicious symbols, all crafted into a collage of artistic impression. Japanese Morning Glory being visted by an insect speaks aloud of the symbiosis of creatures and plant, and at the end of the summer.

Auspicious symbols from Japanese culture, including a fan, daruma doll, Tomoe and Rabbit, with its own cultural significance and very rare on cloisonne artwork.

The borders and back of the charger are adorned with intricate geometric patterns and floral motifs which symbolize the fleeting beauty of life and renewal.

Japanese cloisonne enamel reached its technical peak during the Meiji period (18681912). Artisans refined techniques using thin brass or copper wires attached to metal bases, filling the compartments with coloured glass pastes before firing and polishing to create smooth decorative surfaces.

Cloisonne chargers are constructed using a copper or bronze base plate. Intricate patterns are formed using thin metal strips or wire cloisons, which are filled with vitreous enamel pastes composed of silica, metallic oxides, and fluxes, then repeatedly fired and ground smooth.

Authentic pieces from this era exhibit precise wirework, high-density enamel without air pitting, and complex naturalistic or geometric compositions. The reverse often shows counter-enamelling or exposed bronze patination consistent with age.
