Description

Lor/bakhtiari tribes,west persia,early 20th century.

A rug with a bit of a difference with a simplistic uncluttered five joined medallion pattern. Signed in perhaps a farsi language within the natural coloured ivory field,upper right side.

All made from wool and animal hair. Note the herringbone coloured side cords.

Has been hand washed last images,

All over even pile. Side cords and fringes good. Ready to put straight on floor and admire.

Size is 7 foot 10 inches by 3 foot 10 inches. 239cm X 117cm. At widest points. Fringes not measured in size. Wool pile hand knotted onto wool foundations. Animal hair side cords and fringes.

Weighs 6.6kg. U.k post £20.

Gabbeh rugs are traditional hand-knotted carpets crafted by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in south-western Iran, predominantly the Qashqai and Luri peoples. Historically woven for personal utility rather than commercial trade, they feature thick wool pile, coarse weaving techniques, and minimalist or geometric designs.

Authentic Gabbeh carpets are constructed entirely from hand-spun sheep wool, utilised for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft. The wool is dyed using natural plant and mineral sources, although undyed natural sheep wool in cream, beige, and brown tones is also widely incorporated.

Authentic Gabbeh rugs feature hand-tied asymmetric knots visible on the reverse side, natural variations in dye shading known as abrash, and slight irregularities in shape. They typically display heavy, dense wool construction with bold folk-art motifs rather than intricate, symmetrical city patterns.
