Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, European metalworkers frequently drew inspiration from Classical Antiquity and Renaissance motifs. Items such as dishes, platters, and wall plaques were decorated with mythological figureslike Diana the Huntressusing techniques such as repousse, electrotyping, and casting to satisfy popular Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival tastes.

These decorative items were typically crafted from sheet copper or brass. The relief work was achieved either by hand-hammering from the reverse (repousse) with front chasing, pressure-stamping with dies, or through electroforming, where thin copper was deposited electrically into a mould.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit uneven surface wear consistent with age, natural oxidisation in recessed areas, and hand-finished rim details or mounting loops on the reverse. The back typically displays negative impressions or structural soldering points characteristic of period metalworking methods.

An antique relief plaque can be styled as a focal object resting on a plate stand atop a sideboard, positioned on a mantelpiece, or incorporated into a curated gallery wall alongside framed art to add texture and historical depth.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. To preserve the natural patina and historical oxidisation in recessed areas, avoid abrasive polish, harsh chemical cleaners, or submersion in water.
