Lion Sculpture Carved Wood Life Size 20th Century

1920 - 1940
Description

An impressive large scale highly decorative life size lion, naturalistically carved in hardwood, sitting proudly with beautifully detailed curls to the flowing mane. This wonderful imposing lion is superbly carved from solid hardwood, seated upright on front paws with expressive eyes and mouth open revealing a snarling pose. Traces of original gesso within the carving and years of paint flaking from multiple colors painted over each other. The lion is seated resting on a pine plinth chamfered ogee top edge block fitted with brass castors which can be removed. Impressive in both scale and in depth of relief.
