Size: 4ft 5in x 1ft 1in (135 x 33cm)

Antique Ersari Turkmen torba face with 'schemle gul design.

Circa 1900.

Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed.

This example has a repeat shemle gul design that is also found on weavings by the Saryk Turkmen. The colour is soft earth tones with browns, blues and pink. The torba has good wool with a very soft floppy handle.

The torba is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and full pile.

A torba is a small, elongated woven storage bag traditionally made by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Ersari, to store personal belongings inside a yurt or during transport. The decorative front face of the bag, often featuring repeated geometric tribal emblem motifs called guls, was carefully preserved even after the backing material wore away.

Turkmen trappings were hand-knotted using locally sourced sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation. Natural plant and mineral dyes were utilised to produce deep palette shades, including madder red, indigo blue, and natural ivory or dark brown accents.

Authentic Ersari pieces typically feature a palette dominated by warm terracotta red and dark blue tones, with prominent geometric motifs like the schemle gul set in diamond lattices.
