Description

A stunning antique French marble top inlaid commode. This dates from around the 1880-1900 period.

It is of superb quality, it is predominantly burr walnut, with beautiful inlays of various woods and high quality gilt bronze mounts. The colour tones are lovely, this has two generous drawers and a beautiful pink marble top.

The condition is excellent for its age, we have just had it re-polished. On each side there appears to have been a split, which has been filled and polished over. I think it could have been movement in the join of the wood. It looks worse in the images than in real life.

This antique French commode originates from the 1880 period in the Louis XV style, constructed from burr walnut with multi-wood inlays and a shaped pink marble top. The piece rests on slender cabriole legs fitted with decorative gilt bronze or ormolu mounts, sabots, and ring handles on the drawers. Central marquetry on the drawers depicts musical instruments, complemented by additional brass hardware accents and repaired splits on the sides. The cabinet stands 80 cm high, 73 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, offering two generous storage drawers with warm brown timber tones. It provides an elegant display surface and storage option suitable for a formal reception room, hallway, or bedroom interior.

Originating in the 18th century, the French Louis XV style commode is defined by curved silhouettes, serpentine drawer fronts, and slender cabriole legs. These pieces typically feature decorative wood marquetry, gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, and a fitted marble slab on top.

Cabinet-makers crafted these items using solid oak or pine frames covered in fine veneers of walnut, kingwood, rosewood, or fruitwood. The tops are cut from thick marble, while decorative pulls and protective sabots are cast in brass or bronze.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer lining, hand-planed timber backboards, and authentic unpolished underside textures on the marble slab. Ormolu fittings should show natural casting irregularities and slight tarnish rather than uniform modern machine finishing.

Position the piece as an entryway focal point or bedroom storage accent beneath a large modern mirror or abstract artwork. The contrast between ornate historic woodwork and clean architectural lines balances formal and modern aesthetics.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth and avoid positioning near direct heat sources or direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting. Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral stone cleaner, avoiding acidic fluids that etch the polished surface.
