This nineteenth-century Chinese provincial side table originates from the Gansu Province and is made from dense locust wood, a variety of elm with a warm brown colour and a highly figured, tactile grain. The piece stands 88 cm high, 101 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, taking the form of a small dresser base with an overhanging top, two shallow upper drawers with round wooden pulls, and two lower panelled cupboard doors secured by a traditional brass locking pin. Visible details include raised wooden mouldings framing the doors and drawers, exposed vertical joints on the carcass, and a removable central muntin between the cupboard spaces. In a modern interior, this practical storage unit sits comfortably in an empty hallway corner, a dining room, or a living space to hold table linen, ceramics, or everyday items. The rich wood tone and traditional joinery bring rustic warmth and character to neutral settings, pairing easily with contemporary or antique furniture arrangements while providing concealed storage beneath a generous surface top.

Late 19th-century Chinese provincial furniture is recognised for its utilitarian form, reliance on local hardwoods such as elm or poplar, and functional joinery designed for regional households during the Qing dynasty.

Locust wood is a dense variety of elm valued for its prominent grain patterns, durability, and resistance to wear, making it a preferred timber for daily household furniture in northern China.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal nails, hand-carved drawer runners, hand-forged soft metal hardware, and characteristic wear patterns along base rails and handles.

These cabinets work effectively as accent pieces in entryways, living rooms, or bedrooms, pairing well with contemporary minimalist decor to create visual contrast through rich wood grain.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear microcrystalline wax occasionally to maintain the patinated surface.
