Description

Antique Mid-19th Century Bronze Plaque of the “Calmady Children” by Edward William Wyon (1848)

A superb mid-19th century bronze relief plaque by the noted sculptor Edward William Wyon, after the celebrated earlier oil painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence depicting the Calmady Children, Emily and Laura Anne.

This finely executed three-dimensional plaque portrays the two children in delicate high relief, beautifully capturing the tenderness and charm of Lawrence’s original composition. The figures are enclosed within a turned, stepped halo-style border, inscribed:

“Sir T. Lawrence Dest.”

“E. W. Wyon Sculpt 1st June 1848”

The bronze is hollow cast and displays a rich, well-aged patina, enhancing the depth and detail of the modelling. It is mounted on its original purpose-made oak board, complete with the original lug to the reverse for wall hanging.

Measurements:

Diameter: 21.3 cm

Maximum depth: approximately 4 cm

Condition: In superb condition for its age, with no damage or repairs. The bronze is particularly well preserved and retains an attractive, even patination.

A fine and highly collectible example of Victorian bronze work, combining distinguished artistic lineage with excellent craftsmanship.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A relief plaque is a sculptural work where figures remain attached to a solid background, creating a three-dimensional projection. During the 19th century, bronze reliefs were frequently produced as decorative reproductions of celebrated fine art compositions.

These works were typically cast in bronze using either lost-wax or sand-casting techniques. The finished metal cast was frequently fitted into turned hardwood frames, such as oak or mahogany, for display.

Authentic pieces often feature cast inscriptions, artist signatures, or foundry dates along the lower rim. They demonstrate refined surface hand-chasing, naturally aged patination, and period-correct mounting construction.

Displaying a bronze medallion on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or as part of a gallery wall adds texture and historical context. The deep tone of dark bronze contrasts effectively against contemporary neutral backdrops.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical polishes or water, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the metal patination.
