Description

An exquisitely fine and colourful early saddlebag face (Khorjin) with fabulous multi-coloured, double headed beasts. Superb natural dyes, look how many different reds there are, I count three as well as two greens, yellow, light blue, dark blue, aubergine, ivory and brown. That's an astonishing 11 colours. Professionally mounted and ready for your wall, it looks amazing. A highly collectable and much older than most ethnographic art object.

A Khorjin is a double saddlebag traditionally woven by nomadic tribes such as the Shahsavan of northwestern Persia and the southern Caucasus. Soumak refers to the specific flat-weaving technique where extra supplementary coloured weft threads are wrapped around the warp threads to create dense, detailed geometric patterns.

These textiles were predominantly hand-spun from pure sheep wool for both the warp and wefts, occasionally incorporating cotton highlights. The soumak brocading technique produces a flat face on the front while leaving supplementary loose thread ends on the reverse side.

Authentic pieces display hand-spun wool irregularities, natural plant-based dyes, and a characteristic structural back where loose weft ends remain visible. Patterning often features traditional geometric motifs, stylised animal figures, and regional border variations unique to specific tribal clans.

A single khorjin panel can be custom framed behind non-reflective glass or mounted on a fabric backing for display as decorative wall art. Alternatively, small flat-woven textiles can be draped over side tables or integrated into gallery walls alongside modern art.

Dust should be gently removed using a low-suction vacuum cleaner fitted with a protective mesh attachment. The textile should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading and stored in a moth-protected, climate-controlled environment.
