Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The wingback sofa originated in late 17th-century England, featuring side wings designed to trap heat from open fireplaces and protect sitters from draughts. Over time, the style evolved into a staple of Georgian and Victorian drawing rooms, incorporating deep-buttoned leather upholstery, brass studding, and ornate carved woodwork.

Traditional construction utilizes solid hardwood frames, such as beech or mahogany, paired with hand-tied coil springs and natural fills like horsehair. The exterior typically features full-grain leather secured with individually driven brass tacks, resting on carved wooden cabriole or turned legs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural variations and patina in the leather, hand-carved details on the wooden feet, and mortise-and-tenon frame joinery. Examining the underside reveals hand-stitched webbing and hand-tack placement rather than modern uniform staple lines.

A dark leather wingback sofa provides visual weight and can be balanced against light, neutral walls such as lime wash or soft plaster. Pairing the dark upholstery with contemporary minimal lighting, textured wool throws, or concrete accents creates an engaging contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

To preserve antique leather, keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying and cracking. Buff the surface periodically with a high-quality leather conditioner, clean seams with a soft brush, and treat carved woodwork with natural beeswax.
