Description

A wonderful and rare example of antique early 20th metalwork from the Kashmir region of Northern India. Of unusually large size, this intricately detailed multi lobed form tray or wall hanging is made from copper and then originally silver plated. The piece has been all hand “repoussé” worked, alongside piercing and final detail on the front surface, resulting in incredibly fine detail. A very rare survivor and a certain talking piece!

Condition report:

Very heavy, silver plate mostly worn, some minor damage to edges

Kashmiri repousse metalwork is a traditional craft from northern India characterised by intricate patterns hammered into relief from the reverse side of metal sheets. The style often features dense floral arabesques, paisley motifs, and intricate openwork piercing influenced by Persian artistic traditions.

These trays were primarily crafted from sheet copper or brass, which provided the ductility required for detailed repousse and chasing work. Many pieces were subsequently coated with tin or electroplated with silver to create a contrasting, reflective surface.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-hammered tool marks on the reverse, subtle irregularities in the repeating pattern, and natural wear where the silver plating has rubbed away to reveal the underlying copper substrate.
