This Swedish Empire Revival pedestal desk from 1910 is made from flame birch veneer, ebonised wood, and brass, rendered in a warm golden brown colour with black accents. The three-part structure comprises a top surface, a wide central frieze drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, and two pedestals raised on block feet. Each pedestal door displays a raised geometric panel flanked by ebonised columns with brass key escutcheons, while the tiger birch top surface showcases a prominent wood grain alongside minor surface marks and one small indentation in line with its age and use. The hand-polished finish extends to the reverse, allowing the desk to stand freely in a room. Measuring 77 cm high, 139.7 cm wide, and 78.7 cm deep, this desk is suitable for a study, library, or home office as a workspace or writing table. The drawers operate with keys, and each pedestal opens to reveal four oak drawer slides inside.

Originating in the early 20th century, Swedish Empire Revival furniture draws inspiration from early 19th-century Karl Johan and French Empire styles, defined by Neoclassical architectural proportions, warm flame birch veneers, and contrasting ebonised details.

These pieces commonly feature Scandinavian native timbers, predominantly flame or satin birch veneers applied over pine carcasses, accented with ebonised wood columns and brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery in drawer construction, natural chatoyancy within light birch veneers, solid timber drawer linings, and original steel lock mechanisms.

Position the desk centrally within a dedicated study or library, pairing its rich golden timber tone with neutral wall treatments, minimalist contemporary desk lamps, and classic leather seating.

Maintain the surface by regularly dusting with a microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax sparingly once per year, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and moisture to preserve timber stability.
