Cubist Abstracted Mediterranean Landscape, 1953, Provence, the Alpilles, Vibrant French Gouache Painting on Paper

1940 - 1960
Description

This striking cubist landscape captures the Mediterranean countryside with a bold, rhythmic vitality. Painted in 1953, the work demonstrates Marcel Dumont’s transition toward a structured, almost architectural approach to nature.

The artist utilises a brilliant palette of emerald greens, ochre fields, and deep Mediterranean blues, all articulated through confident, sweeping brushstrokes.

Marcel Dumont (1921-1998) was actually born in the very North of France, in Douai. He began painting and drawing at just 14 years old. He was also a scholar, studying Philosophy in Lyon and Paris between 1940 and 1947.

He became a Professor of Philosophy in 1948, but continued to paint alongside his academic career. He fell in love with the landscape of the Alpilles in Provence, depicted here.

Dumont's deep intellectual background heavily influenced his work; critics often noted that he didn't just paint landscapes, but "tracked the secret structure" of elements like stone, wood, and light. Our painting demonstrates this perfectly: he foreground is anchored by stylised, skeletal trees that provide a wonderful sense of depth, leading the eye toward the sun-drenched village nestled in the hills.

Close to Jean Bazaine and admired by Jean Cocteau, Dumont is considered a Master of Lyrical Abstraction. In 2021, a major centennial retrospective of his work was held across two museums: the Musée Vouland in Avignon and the Musée des Alpilles in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

Our gouache on paper is signed and dated 1953 at the lower left. Measuring 50 x 65 cm for the painting alone, the overall size in an quality frame is 64 x 79 cm.

Mid-century French Cubist landscapes blend geometric abstraction with regional outdoor scenery, influenced by post-war European art movements. These works break natural forms down into simplified planes, angular structures, and expressive colour fields.

Gouache is an opaque water-based paint consisting of natural pigments, water, and a binding agent such as gum arabic. It was traditionally applied to heavy paper or artist board, providing a smooth, velvety matte surface with rich colour density.

Authentic period gouache works exhibit natural age-related toning on the paper substrate, layered opaque brushwork, and original artist signatures or dates. Inspection under conservation mounting often reveals historical paper stock and original framing marks.

A bold mid-century landscape serves as an effective visual anchor when hung above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or sofa. Combining the artwork with natural wood furniture and neutral backdrop tones emphasizes its graphic composition and colour balance.

Gouache artwork on paper must be mounted behind UV-protective glass using acid-free materials to prevent contact between the paint layer and the glass. Keep the piece in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent fading or paper deterioration.
