Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Repousse is a metalworking technique where malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Popularised in antiquity and revived extensively during the Renaissance and 19th century, it was frequently used to create decorative chargers, armor, and ornamental shields depicting classical narrative scenes.

Nineteenth-century repousse decorative shields were predominantly crafted from sheet copper, brass, or bronze due to their malleability and durability. Some examples were further finished with dark patination, silver plating, or gilt highlights to accentuate the depth of the relief carving.

Authentic 19th-century repousse displays distinct signs of hand-hammering, including slight irregularities on the reverse side corresponding to the raised front design. Look for natural patination, subtle surface wear in high-relief areas, and tool marks rather than the uniform, flat backs characteristic of modern cast or machine-stamped reproductions.

A repousse shield functions as a striking focal point when mounted above a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into a gallery wall, or displayed within a dark academia, library, or traditional living room setting. The warm copper tones pair effectively with dark wood panelling, exposed brickwork, and deep interior colour palettes.

To preserve the original patina and surface oxidisation, dust the shield regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners, which can strip away historic patination; if protection is desired, apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax and buff gently.
