Chuval are storage bags used by the Turkmen nomads for the storage of personal items inside the yurt and also for the transport of goods on the backs of camels or horses. They were often woven in pairs.

The chuval face is well drawn and has good clear colours, note the decorative elem panel at the lower end.

Good condition with even wear, there are a few spots of slightly heavier wear that can be seen in the images, this is reflected in the price. The plain weave back has been removed at some time in the chuvals history.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chuval is a large traditional storage bag woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes of Central Asia, historically used inside yurt dwellings to store household goods and garments.

Traditional Turkmen chuvals were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and foundation, coloured with natural plant and insect dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit dense hand-knotted wool construction, natural dye variations, precise repeating octagonal guls, and a finely detailed lower elem border.

A chuval face can be mounted as framed wall art, repurposed into a decorative floor cushion, or draped over a console or bench to introduce rich colour and texture.

Vacuum gently without a suction brush bar, keep out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialized cleaning.
