Painted Satinwood and Caned Settee

1900 - 1920
Description

An elegant English settee in the Regency taste, constructed in satinwood and finely detailed throughout. The gently curved arms and rectangular back are infilled with finely woven cane panels, the back centred by twin oval medallions framed in concentric cane work. The frieze and legs are enriched with delicate green-painted neoclassical ornament, including husk swags, ribbons, and rosettes, all retaining good definition. The seat is upholstered in a pale green damask, complementary to the painted decoration. Raised on tapering square legs with further painted detail. A refined and well-proportioned example, combining lightness of form with high-quality craftsmanship.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton style furniture from the late 18th century is characterised by delicate proportions, straight lines, square tapered legs, and decorative hand-painted ornament such as floral swags, ribbons, and classical medallions on fine light-coloured hardwoods like satinwood.

These seating pieces typically utilise a solid satinwood or mahogany frame, hand-woven natural cane panels for the backrest and sides, and traditional horsehair-padded upholstered seats covered in silk or damask fabric.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-woven cane work secured with individual wooden pegs, hand-painted details displaying fine brushwork with natural surface patination, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery with minor timber shrinkage.

Position the piece in a formal hallway, at the foot of a bed, or beneath a window frame to serve as occasional seating while allowing the open lattice cane back and painted framework to remain visually unobstructed.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent wood shrinkage or cane embrittlement. Dust painted surfaces gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth and avoid applying harsh chemical polishes.
