Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This refurbished antique fire grate originates from the 1930 period and follows a Regency style. Constructed from cast iron with a black finish, the piece incorporates polished brass urn-shaped finials mounted on each side. The design displays a rounded sunburst pediment at the top, horizontal bars across the basket front, floral relief swags decorating the lower rail, and swept scroll feet that curve outward at the base. 64 cm high by 55 cm wide by 30 cm depth in practical terms. The piece serves as a traditional fireplace insert suitable for installation within an active hearth or as a decorative focal point in a living room or reception room setting. The cast iron shows an even black surface, and the brass elements provide a contrasting metallic highlight against the dark body. Maintenance involves standard cleaning appropriate for cast metal fireplace accessories.

FAQs

A Regency period fire grate is a metal basket designed to elevate fuel within a hearth to facilitate airflow and efficient heat distribution. Developed during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these pieces were characterised by classical architectural motifs such as urn finials, sunburst pediments, and draped leaf swags.

Traditional fire grates were primarily crafted from heavy cast iron, which provided the structural durability needed to withstand extreme combustion temperatures. Decorative highlights were frequently fashioned from polished brass or steel, including finials, urns, and front aprons.

Authentic period pieces display distinct marks of historical foundry casting, including slight surface texture variations, substantial visual weight, and threaded brass fixings secured with square nuts. Original grates often exhibit minor heat oxidisation or pitting on the internal rear plate from historical usage.

An antique fire grate serves as an elegant focal point within a restored chimney breast, contrasting seamlessly against clean slate or marble hearth tiles. In decommissioned fireplaces, it can be styled decoratively with dried birch logs or grouped pillar candles.

Cast iron should be kept completely dry to avoid rust formation and treated periodically with black grate polish or black lead paste to maintain its deep matte finish. Brass fittings should be cleaned using a specialized metal polish applied with a soft cloth to protect the metal.
