A portrait miniature is a small, highly detailed painting, typically executed on ivory, vellum, or card during the 16th to 19th centuries, often worn as jewellery or kept as a personal memento.

Traditional portrait miniatures were commonly painted in watercolour or gouache on thin slices of ivory, animal parchment, or card, and housed in gold, brass, or wooden frames, frequently protected by glass.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit fine stippling and cross-hatching techniques under magnification, genuine period framing with hand-cut glass, and materials consistent with 18th or 19th-century manufacturing methods.

These small-scale artworks can be grouped in a gallery wall arrangement, displayed in specialised miniature display cabinets, or placed on small surfaces such as mantelpieces using dedicated display stands.

To prevent fading and material degradation, antique miniatures must be kept out of direct sunlight, maintained in stable humidity conditions, and handled with care to protect the fragile painted surface.
