Small 18th Century Blue and White Delft Plate

18th century
Description

A beautifully decorated late 18th century blue and white Delft side plate, with central design and the border divided into four sections. This has minimal damage for a delft plate of this period.

Condition: Some wear to the glaze around the edges, as is typical with delftware, and a few small chips to the glaze. There is a small hole drilled through the plate - I assume someone was trying to create a way of hanging it.

Dimensions:

Diameter - 20cm

Depth - 3cm

Free UK delivery - the item will be sent using a tracked and signed for service. If you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere please get in touch.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dust gently using a dry soft-bristled brush or clean microfibre cloth without aggressive chemicals. Submerging in water should be avoided, as exposed porous clay at rim chips can absorb moisture.

Displaying these ceramics in a wall-mounted gallery, arrayed along a dresser shelf, or arranged on a sideboard top adds historical character and contrast to contemporary interior schemes.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit surface glaze crazing, characteristic rim flaking known as fritting where the brittle glaze exposes the underlying clay, and slight hand-painted variations.

These plates were formed from earthenware clay, coated with an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide, and painted with cobalt metal oxide pigments prior to kiln firing.

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in the Netherlands and Great Britain from the sixteenth century onward, characterised by hand-painted cobalt blue designs inspired by imported East Asian porcelain.
