Small 18th Century Blue and White Delft Plate

Description

A beautifully decorated late 18th century blue and white Delft side plate, with central design and the border divided into four sections. This has minimal damage for a delft plate of this period.

Condition: Some wear to the glaze around the edges, as is typical with delftware, and a few small chips to the glaze. There is a small hole drilled through the plate - I assume someone was trying to create a way of hanging it.

This eighteenth century Dutch Delftware side plate is formed from tin-glazed earthenware and finished with a hand-painted cobalt blue glaze on a white ground. The design consists of a central circular medallion surrounded by a scrolled border divided into four decorated sections with hand-painted foliate motifs. Visible signs of age include light rim fritting, minor chips and wear to the glaze around the edges, and a small suspension hole drilled through the body near the lower rim. Measuring 20 cm wide by 3 cm deep, this circular decorative plate functions effectively when displayed flat upon a sideboard top within an English country house interior.

FAQs

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in the Netherlands and Great Britain from the sixteenth century onward, characterised by hand-painted cobalt blue designs inspired by imported East Asian porcelain.

These plates were formed from earthenware clay, coated with an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide, and painted with cobalt metal oxide pigments prior to kiln firing.
