Superb Japanese Vintage (Early 20thc) Bronze Horse, Tokyo Foundry, Sakai Kōzan

1920 - 1940
Description

Striking large early 20thC Japanese bronze horse made at the Tokyo Foundry by Sakai Kōzan. Expertly modelled and cast, the bronze combines artistic refinement with exceptional technical mastery. The sculpture conveys both dignity and latent power through its harmonious proportions, subtle modelling and realistic anatomy. The stallion is depicted standing four square with its head turned slightly to the right. Rather than relying on dramatic movement, Kōzan captures the nobility of the animal through understated elegance and sculptural confidence, qualities that characterize the finest works of modern Japanese bronze art.

The bronze bears the inscription 東京工廠製 (Tōkyō Kōshō-sei), meaning ‘made at the Tokyo Foundry’, which attests that the work was cast in one of Tokyo’s prestigious state-run industrial foundries, whose technical expertise ranked among the best in Japan during the first half of the 20th century. Raised on an oblong base, it measures 36.5cm x 39cm x 14cm, weight 7.75kg.

Excellent condition and patina.

Sakai Kōzan (酒井公山) was a early 20th-century Japanese bronze artist and the director of the renowned Takaoka Chūgei-sha, one of Japan’s most distinguished bronze workshops located in Takaoka (Toyama prefecture), the historic cradle of bronze casting in Japan for over four centuries. Over the years the workshop (which is still in operation) has built an exceptional reputation, both for its refined artistic bronzes and for its ambitious monumental commissions.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Meiji period bronzes (18681912) are renowned for their realistic anatomical representation, detailed surface modelling, and technical casting excellence following the opening of Japan to Western trade and the dissolution of traditional samurai armour making.

These sculptures were predominantly produced using lost-wax cast bronze techniques, followed by hand-chasing to define fine features and the application of chemical patinas to achieve deep, rich tones.

Authentic pieces usually display substantial weight, refined detail in muscle and hair texture, and often bear cast or incised signatures or workshop seals, such as those from established foundries or arsenals.

A bronze animal sculpture functions well as a focal point on an executive office desk, a styled bookshelf, or a fireplace mantelpiece, providing tactile texture and architectural weight within modern or traditional schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, and occasionally apply a light layer of clear microcrystalline wax to protect the natural patina from moisture and handling.
