Impressive 19th-century Mahogany Dressing Chest

19th century
Description

Impressive 19th-Century Mahogany Dressing Chest with Marble Top and Carved Winged Caryatids

A magnificent late 19th-century mahogany dressing chest featuring a richly figured marble top and an imposing mirror supported by finely carved winged female caryatids. The large mirror is framed in carved mahogany and embellished with etched floral corner motifs, adding refinement and period character.

The mirror supports are masterfully sculpted caryatid-style figures, each displaying detailed plumage, drapery, and scrollwork bases—hallmarks of the bold decorative vocabulary of the Renaissance Revival style.

The chest is fitted with a beautifully polished marble surface in warm, softly veined tones. Beneath the carved foliate frieze are two long, slim concealed drawers, with three substantial full-width drawers forming the main body. Each drawer retains period-style brass handles and operates smoothly. The case is framed by turned and carved columns, with the lower apron decorated by fluting and rosette motifs and supported on boldly carved feet.

A highly sculptural and visually commanding dressing chest, combining exceptional craftsmanship with strong architectural presence—an outstanding example of Victorian-era design.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century mahogany dressing chest is a composite piece of bedroom furniture combining a chest of drawers with an integrated upper mirror frame. Popular during the Empire, Regency, and Victorian periods, these pieces feature flame mahogany veneers, classical carved motifs, and often a marble writing or vanity top.

These chests were constructed primarily using solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods like pine or oak. They frequently incorporate marble tops, cast brass drawer pulls, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and silvered glass mirrors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative elements, uneven hand-sawn secondary timber on drawer bottoms, and hand-cut dovetail joints. Look for natural age marks, original lock escutcheons, and period-correct glass silvering or oxidation on the mirror.

Position the piece as a focal point in a master bedroom, dressing room, or grand hallway. Balance the dark mahogany tones against contemporary neutral wall paint, simple linen drapery, and understated decorative accents to highlight the intricate classical carving.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain. Clean marble surfaces using pH-neutral marble cleaners to prevent etching, and clean the mirror glass with a damp microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals on surrounding woodwork.
