Description

Charming and archaic, this truly tribal salt-bag, 'namakdan' in Persian, was made by Kurdish tribes in Kurdistan during the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

With an '8-pointed star' dominating the central field and symbolising protection, the bag has a lustrous knotted pile and was probably made by a Kurdish nomad who had limited amount of spare wool in her possession as it appears she has used all the wool at her disposal! Note the abrash of natural un-dyed wool in the centre and the additional ivory border at the base of the bag. Was she experimenting with border patterns at this point? I also love the very stylised depiction of a human figure with stylised animals on either side at the base of the neck!

The back of the bag is woven in narrow, horizontal bands of plain-weave.

A great little namakdan, made in the most tribal way.

A namakdan is a traditional Persian salt bag woven by nomadic tribes to store and transport rock salt for livestock.

These pieces are typically constructed using hand-spun wool for the pile and flatweave sections, often dyed with natural vegetable pigments.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregular hand-spun yarns, natural dye variations, traditional tribal motifs, and authentic wear consistent with nomadic use.

Such pieces are frequently mounted and framed as wall art or displayed flat on surfaces to highlight their intricate geometric patterns and texture.

Preservation requires keeping items out of direct sunlight, avoiding excessive moisture, and gently vacuuming with a mesh screen covering.
