The William and Mary style, prevalent in late 17th-century England, is characterised by Dutch influences, sophisticated marquetry, oyster-cut veneering, and sturdy yet elegant proportions.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly used native and imported woods such as walnut, oak, and pine, frequently incorporating exotic veneers, brass drop handles, and intricate marquetry details.

Authentication involves examining hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass hardware, secondary woods consistent with the era, and the natural ageing and patination of the timber.

Such a statement piece functions effectively as an anchor in a contemporary living space or bedroom, contrasting cleanly against neutral walls to highlight its intricate craftsmanship.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood surface.
