A mid 19th century Mudjur rug woven in Central Anatolia, in the Kirshehir region an area famous for using vivid natural dyes and one way niche designs. The weavers used the softest wool along with great colours and this piece is no exception. The Mihrab (arch shaped design in the centre) is the rare soft green dye and we can see lots of aubergine and brown dyes which had corroded in the design. This is due to the iron properties in the ancient wool, as it corrodes over time adding an embossed effect. The cloud-band mofit in the top panel is really beautiful in this pale blue dye, they multiple stripe border was also a design trait of this weaving area.
Condition is untouched, woven around 1850 we can see a few small holes in areas but in general this rare early rug has retained its wool pile and both fringe end areas, where we can even see some original flat-weave kilim in-tact too. The holes could be repaired by our expert restoration team if required, but we felt to leave it ...all original for now. A rare and collectable antique Turkish rug, please look at all the additional images to see the glorious dyes up close.
Please use our request home visit service to view this antique Mudjur rug in your own home, you can choose a suitable day and time for us to visit you.
