Antique ‘Jail’ Agra Carpet, Timuri Baluch Design, Superb Condition, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 11ft 7in x 11ft 9in (352 x 358cm).

Antique ‘Jail’ Agra carpet in a Timuri Baluch design.

Circa 1880.

It is suggested that these carpets were woven in the prisons of Agra, India during the latter part of the 19th century by prisoners of Timuri origin. The design is identical to carpets woven by the Timuri of western Afghanistan during the 19th century.

The carpet is of almost square size, the colours are wonderful with a richness and depth.

The Carpet is in excellent condition with very slight wear and almost full pile, there is some corrosion to the blacks. The carpet has a dense weave and an almost velvet like pile. This is one of the most outstanding carpets that I have handled in the last 30 years.

The carpet is suitable for normal domestic use.

The carpet has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Agra Jail carpets were produced in northern India during the late nineteenth century within central prisons, where weavers executed precise patterns derived from classical Persian and regional tribal designs.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool warp and weft structure, using dyes extracted from natural plant and mineral sources.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-tied asymmetrical knots, subtle colour shifts known as abrash, a flexible structure, and classic geometric or floral repeating motifs.

Position the carpet as an anchor in a neutral room, pairing deep crimson and indigo shades with natural timber furniture or tailored leather upholstery to create contrast.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush bar, rotate annually to ensure balanced wear, and employ professional low-moisture cleaning techniques when required.
