Description

Another Robert Kime favourite, a well worn, soft coloured early Turkish carpet, this time from the town of Ghiordes in Western Anatolia (Turkey). He used these extensively to furnish his clients homes, ands own. It's hardly surprising, as he was packed with natural good taste and these rugs bring so much to interior decoration, with the soft magenta, turquoise and cream colours. Heavily worn but that's part of the aesthetic too, and reflected in the price.

Ghiordes carpets originate from the town of Ghiordes in western Anatolia, Turkey, renowned for historical weaving traditions dating back to the Ottoman Empire, frequently featuring central mihrab designs and rich madder red dyes.

Authentic pieces are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often utilizing natural vegetable dyes derived from madder root, indigo, and weld to achieve deep, lasting colours.

Authentication involves examining the symmetry of the Ghiordes (symmetric) knot, irregularities in hand-spun wool, natural colour variations from vegetable dying, and characteristic border motifs unique to western Anatolian weaving.

Layering an antique carpet over neutral natural flooring or placing it as a focal point in a minimalist room grounds the space, introducing rich texture, history, and a sophisticated contrast against contemporary furniture.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye degradation, and utilizing professional specialist cleaning services periodically.
