Georgian Miniature Oak Kneehole Desk

18th century
Description

A Charming And Relatively Rare Mid 18th Century, Georgian, Oak Miniature Kneehole Desk, Having Seven Drawers With Original Turned Brass Knobs Flanking Central Cupboard Door With Geometric Inlaid Decoration.

Often there is debate over miniature furnitures original purpose. Was it was made as an apprentice piece, which is where somebody who is looking for a job in a workshop would create something to showcase their talents, or was it made as a travelling salesman sample piece, which is where a few articles were made as scale models in advance of a road trip on which the salesman would travel the country showing prospective clients the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and take orders from.

This beautiful little miniature antique desk is almost certainly a travelling salesmans sample piece. It’s form is quite rare and it is intricately designed, making it quite unlikely to be something which an apprentice would be tasked with creating. Indeed an apprentice would be far more likely to have just made a normal miniature chest of drawers.

As with all items which we offer for sale this item has been inspected by our trained, specialist antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is presented in top condition before being offered for sale.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian miniature kneehole desk is a scaled-down version of a traditional eighteenth-century writing desk, often constructed by apprentice cabinetmakers to demonstrate technical proficiency or created as a portable trade sample.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, paired with hand-cast brass hardware including brass turned knobs or batwing handles and iron lock mechanisms.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed back panels, irregular drawer lining timber, natural oxidation inside the carcass, and light wear patterns surrounding keyholes and pull handles.

These scaled pieces function effectively on top of a larger sideboard, office desk, or bookshelf to store small items, jewellery, or stationery while adding architectural interest.

Apply a light coating of natural beeswax polish annually along the wood grain and keep the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
