Antique French Bronze Grand Tour Model of the Arc De Triomphe 19th C

19th century
For Sale by Regent Antiques
Description

A delightful French bronze Grand Tour model of the Arc De Triomphe, circa 1860 in date.

The beautifully realistic model is cast in high relief and is mounted on a black marble base.

The monument stands at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly named Place de l'Étoile—the étoile or "star" of the juncture formed by its twelve radiating avenues.

The location of the arc and the plaza is shared between three arrondissements, 16th (south and west), 17th (north), and 8th (east). The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.

The Arc de Triomphe

is located on the right bank of the Seine at the centre of a dodecagonal configuration of twelve radiating avenues. It was commissioned in 1806, after the victory at Austerlitz by Emperor Napoleon at the peak of his fortunes. Laying the foundations alone took two years and, in 1810, when Napoleon entered Paris from the west with his new bride, Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria, he had a wooden mock-up of the completed arch constructed. The architect, Jean Chalgrin, died in 1811 and the work was taken over by Jean-Nicolas Huyot.

During the Bourbon Restoration, construction was halted, and it would not be completed until the reign of King Louis-Philippe, between 1833 and 1836, by the architects Goust, then Huyot, under the direction of Héricart de Thury. On 15 December 1840, brought back to France from Saint Helena, Napoleon's remains passed under it on their way to the Emperor's final resting place at the Invalides.[9] Prior to burial in the Panthéon, the body of Victor Hugo was displayed under the Arc during the night of 22 May 1885.

The Grand Tour was the traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transit in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary.

It served as an educational rite of passage. Though primarily associated with the British nobility and wealthy landed gentry, similar trips were made by wealthy young men of Protestant Northern European nations on the Continent, and from the second half of the 18th century some South American, U.S., and other overseas youth joined in. The tradition was extended to include more of the middle class after rail and steamship travel made the journey less of a burden.

The primary value of the Grand Tour, it was believed, lay in the exposure both to the cultural legacy of classical antiquity and the Renaissance, and to the aristocratic and fashionably polite society of the European continent. In addition, it provided the only opportunity to view specific works of art, and possibly the only chance to hear certain music. A grand tour could last from several months to several years. It was commonly undertaken in the company of a knowledgeable guide or tutor.

The Grand Tour not only provided a liberal education but allowed those who could afford it the opportunity to buy things otherwise unavailable at home, and it thus increased participants' prestige and standing. Grand Tourists would return with crates of art, books, pictures, sculpture, and items of culture, which would be displayed in libraries, cabinets, gardens, and drawing rooms, as well as the galleries built purposely for their display; The Grand Tour became a symbol of wealth and freedom.

Grand Tour bronze models are scaled souvenir replicas of classical monuments and architectural landmarks produced primarily in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Wealthy European travellers purchased these items during educational tours of continental Europe to serve as mementos and decorative display pieces.

These models were typically cast in patinated or gilded bronze and mounted on polished marble, porphyry, or slate bases. The lost-wax casting method was frequently employed to capture intricate relief carvings and structural details.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display crisp cast detailing, natural age-related patina, and hand-finished crispness in the metalwork. They usually feature heavy black slate or marble plinths attached with original threaded iron rods and square nuts underneath.

Position the bronze sculpture on a mantelpiece, dark wood bookshelf, or executive desk alongside books and geometric accents. The deep patinated tone creates a sophisticated focal point within contemporary or traditional studies.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean carved recesses. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes or water, and apply a thin coat of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface patina.
