FAQs

Nineteenth-century oil paintings often reflect romanticism, realism, or pastoral themes, capturing narrative scenes, landscapes, and historical subjects with meticulous brushwork and rich colour palettes.

These works typically utilise oil pigments applied to stretched woven canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames finished with gesso and gold leaf.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas age, craquelure in the paint surface, stretcher bar construction, maker marks, and the traditional craftsmanship of the gilded wooden frame.

Pairing historical art with contemporary furnishings creates a sophisticated eclectic contrast, allowing the traditional canvas to serve as a focal point against neutral walls.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, and consult a professional conservator for periodic cleaning and frame maintenance.
