Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian portraiture from the late nineteenth century frequently featured domestic scenes, narrative themes, and idealised figurative subjects. Artists employed naturalistic lighting and rich colour palettes, often housing finished works in ornate gilded frames.

Paintings from this era were typically executed using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were constructed from carved timber coated in gesso, detailed with moulded plaster work, and finished with gold leaf.

Authentic pieces display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, natural darkening or oxidisation of original varnish, and hand-stretched canvas over wooden stretcher bars. The rear frame assembly often shows darkened timber and historical framing hardware.

A classic oil portrait can be hung above a fireplace mantel, styled on a gallery wall alongside contemporary prints, or displayed on a console table against a muted wall background to create visual contrast.

Dust the surface lightly using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths. Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and sudden temperature fluctuations to prevent canvas warp and paint cracking.
