Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian period in the early 20th century, portrait painting transitioned from rigid Victorian formality towards expressive character studies and impressionistic brushwork. Artists frequently used dramatic lighting and focused on detailed anatomical studies of their subjects.

Oil paintings from this era were typically executed using artist-grade oil pigments mixed with linseed oil, painted onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, or solid wooden panels. Works were often finished with a natural resin varnish to protect the paint layer.

Authentic paintings display natural age-related craquelure across the paint surface, oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas, and hand-applied brush strokes with varying paint depth. Signatures, dates, and historical framers labels also assist in verification.

Antique portraits add historical depth to contemporary spaces when displayed as a focal point above a console table or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall. Pairing traditional oil art with modern linear furniture creates an engaging visual contrast.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, moisture, and fluctuating temperatures to prevent canvas warping or paint cracking. Dust gentle surfaces periodically with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding moisture or harsh chemical cleaners.
