Maud Raphael Jones was a British landscape and genre painter born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1862. Despite the apparently feminine first name, Maud Raphael Jones was male, a fact confirmed by family records and census data. He worked primarily in oils and watercolours, specialising in atmospheric landscapes, rural scenes and pastoral subjects.
Jones exhibited widely during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, including at major London venues such as the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Society of British Artists and numerous provincial exhibitions. His work is characterised by a sensitive treatment of light, seasonal atmosphere and the British countryside.
