Description

This charming namakdan (salt-bag) was woven by Shahsevan nomads in the environs of Varamin in north-central Persia circa 1900. It is completely original with braided handle and neck tassels and incorpoates beautiful natural shades of sky and mid blues, soft orange and some green. I suspect the purple-pink colour used as highlighting and obvious in the two neck tassels, is an early synthetic dye by the name of fuchsine, which was used sparingly as a bright new colour, from 1870 through until 1900.

Size: 38 cm (1' 3") square.

Shahsevan salt bags were traditionally hand-woven by nomadic tribes in the northwestern regions of Persia, primarily utilised for storing rock salt for livestock during seasonal migrations.

These functional bags are typically constructed using hand-spun sheep wool for both the warp and weft, often employing flatweave kilim techniques combined with supplementary weft-wrapping.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the natural dye palette, hand-spun wool irregularities, traditional tribal motifs, and structural wear consistent with nomadic use prior to synthetic dye introduction.

An antique textile can be mounted as wall art in a shadow box, displayed on a minimalist shelf, or incorporated into an eclectic gallery wall to add texture and historical depth.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, gently vacuuming with a mesh screen covering, and avoiding excessive moisture to protect the natural fibres.
