Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century English country chest of drawers is constructed from painted oak. The exterior displays a sage green finish combined with off-white drawer fronts featuring an all-over quatrefoil pattern. Brass swan-neck pull handles are mounted to each drawer, and keyholes appear on both the upper and lower drawers. The piece stands on shaped bracket feet beneath a flush top surface. It follows a two-over-three drawer layout with two smaller upper drawers positioned above three wider full-width drawers below. Surface wear, chips, and craquelure are visible across the painted finish, showing the age of the timber beneath. The chest measures 97 cm high by 95 cm wide and 52 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this chest of drawers provides versatile storage for a bedroom, hallway, or living space. The neutral yet patterned palette complements traditional English country house interiors as well as more relaxed eclectic settings. It functions well for storing clothing, linens, or everyday household items while adding distinct period character to the room.

FAQs

Historically, painted finishes were applied to native softwoods or hardwoods in English country homes to imitate costly inlays or add decorative colour patterns to functional bedroom furniture.

These pieces typically feature solid wood construction, hand-cut dovetailed drawer joinery, brass swan-neck handles, and multi-layered decorative paint or milk-based pigment finishes.

Look for natural surface wear along high-contact edges, original wood shrinkage splits, hand-cut dovetail construction inside drawers, and authentic patina or oxidisation on brass hardware.

A decorative painted chest serves as a focal point in a hallway or bedroom, pairing effectively with contemporary neutral walls and modern artwork to create visual balance.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid water or harsh chemical cleaners that can lift aged paint or strip original wax finishes.
