Description

1930s silver Cyma pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel (3 adjustments) stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Cyma name.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case back for Birmingham 1937 with a case maker’s mark for the Dennison Watch Case Company, an English case maker and supplier to various watch makers. The case is in lovely condition with just light surface marking. Nice crisp engine turned detail to the back with a vacant cartouche to the centre.

The acrylic lens is in good condition, just a little light marking but all very acceptable.

The signed dial is in good condition with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch comes with a single silver chain, 36cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. The T-bar and clasp are hallmarked for 1909, and each of the graduated links have the lion silver mark. Also included is a double sided silver fob with rose gold wash detailing. The chain and fob weigh 44g.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Pocket watches emerged in Europe during the 16th century following the invention of the mainspring, evolving from portable table clocks into personal timekeepers worn inside clothing pockets.

Traditional pocket watches feature cases made from sterling silver, gold, gold-filled metals, or base metals, housing brass and steel precision mechanical movements protected by glass or crystal dials.

Authentic pieces are identified through hallmark stamps on the case, maker signatures on the dial and movement plates, serial numbers, and the presence of hand-wound mechanical movements rather than quartz mechanisms.

A pocket watch can be displayed within a glass-topped display case, mounted in a shadow box, or placed on a desk stand as a sophisticated horological sculpture.

Mechanical watches require regular professional servicing, careful manual winding without overwinding, and storage in dry, temperature-controlled environments away from moisture and magnetic fields.
