Description

A striking Japanese lacquered Tansu chest in excellent antique condition. The wood has developed a deep reddish-brown patina, beautifully offset by ornate black iron hardware. The chest features a well-balanced arrangement of drawers and compartments, including a hinged door and smaller internal drawers, offering versatile storage. The ironwork is particularly noteworthy: the central lock plate is adorned with a finely cast turtle motif, symbolising longevity, while the upper section features a dynamic bird in flight, representing protection and strength. The original working key is present, fitting smoothly into the lock mechanism and securing the cabinet with ease. This piece reflects the seamless blend of function and craftsmanship found in traditional Japanese cabinetry.
